morisena, a place where international artists are welcomed as guests
morisena was born in the European cultural dynamism of 2007 and aimed to explore, enrich and stimulate the cross border cultural dialog, reciprocity and connectivity in the local art context. The art center was inspired by the worrd MUSAFIR ~ which as a word, has its roots in the Urdu language and it means traveler, passenger. During the migration of people from east to west, the word was adopted in the Romanian language, with the meaning of "guest". Apparently, at that time travellers were seen as welcome guests, as they still seen in most Eastern cultures. In my understanding, it expresses the symbiosis of the Indo-European people and it inspires me to symbolically see individuals as travellers, as welcomed guests, to stand open and available to everyone that I meet throughout my work and journeys.
People in the West see people in the East as 'different' and people in the East see people in the West as 'different' again, not always in positive ways. We mostly see what could be a source of potential nuisance in the other, partly due to lack of information and subjectivity in the mass media. Given the present ongoing wars and conflicts, the existence of groups that still need special social care and education, the geographic areas that seem to be in danger due to irresponsible ways of exploitation, we see a lot of work that needs to be done in order to improve the general understanding of interdependency between the named issues and embrace the challenge.
As an art center, we wish to create physical and virtual connections between artists, travelers and volunteers all over the world, to promote hospitality, dialogue and exchange between west and east, north and south. We wish to contribute to a better understanding and appreciation of the interdependency between individuals, between humans and nature and the role everyone can play through his/her understanding, attitude and interaction with the world. By means of initiating and participating in collaborative, international projects in the fields of art, cultural exchange, education and local development, we intend to come closer to fellow citizens, to explore and share our backgrounds and experience, to cherish the diversity of cultures we each come from and participate in the promoting of knowledge. Within our vision, art stands for exploration, introspection, expression, reflection, and (re)creation. Through art, new questions and reflections can be formulated out of the present global / local / personal context that can serve as triggers in the evolution of thought (in the broadest sense of the word) and propose new perceptions on things. Through cultural exchanges, new visions on diversity get born, that can teach us to cherish and nourish our roots and our environment as well as those of fellow travellers. Through voluntary work projects we wish to contribute to the wellness of areas and social groups that seem to be less fortunate, as we'll play a complementary role where governments have difficulties reaching. Through open and broad communication we intend to disseminate the spirit and outcomes of our embarkations.
